Title: Report on Civilian Casualties of Victim-activated Explosions 2008

Summary

This annual report has been prepared on the basis of information gathered through INSEC Active Surveillance System to picture the effects of explosive devices (ED) on civilians in Nepal in January-December 2008. In 2008, INSEC Surveillance System identified 73 new casualties from 38 victim-activated explosions caused by mines, improvised explosive devices and other explosive devices. Of these, four people were killed and 69 were injured. The number of casualties decreased by 30% (73, down from 104 in 2007) and the number of incidents decreased by 10% (38, down from 42 in 2007). Despite the decrease in incidents related to armed conflict, the increase in incidents related to armed groups in Tarai has caused the incident numbers to remain consistent.
