A two-day-long National CSO Consultation on National Human Rights Commission has been organized jointly organized by INSEC, Forum Asia and ANNI. The program has initiated in Kathmandu from September 6, 2022.
Speaking at the Consultation, Chairperson of INSEC Dr. Indira Shrestha said that the National Human Rights Mechanism will contribute to promoting and protecting human rights if it can play its proper role according to the constitution and laws. She further added that ANNI has been publishing the report on human rights since 2006 and the report has given a way forward on improving the issues of human rights.

She recalled that the civil society organizations of Nepal have contributed to the campaign against caste-based discrimination, violence against women and abusive practices, and National Human Rights Commission is the guardian of these organizations. The two-day session is expected to provide suggestions for the improvement of human rights institutions.
Somera Sanyal, a representative of Forum Asia said that since 2006, ANNI has been publishing a report on the role of human rights commissions in Asia and it has an important role in protecting and promoting human rights, and such consultations are being held in various Asian countries to make the report effective.

Sanyal also shared that the discussion on various topics will be important in making suggestions for enhancing the capacity of the National Human Rights Commission.
In the workshop, Murari Kharel, Acting Secretary of the National Human Rights Commission, will present on the status of complaints, investigations and recommendations of the Human Rights Commission, Bijay Raj Gautam, Executive Director of INSEC, will present on the role of civil society in investigating, documenting and filing complaints about human rights violations.

Lily Thapa, a member of the National Human Rights Commission, will present on the role of the National Human Rights Commission and civil society organizations for the victims’ access to justice, and Sushil Pyakurel, the founding Chairperson of INSEC and ANNI’s advisor, will present a paper on the role of civil society in implementing the recommendations of the National Human Rights Commission.
The consultation is being attended by representatives of National Human Rights Commission and other thematic commissions and representatives of civil society organizations participated in the workshop.
