Informal Sector Service Center (INSEC) and Geneva-based non-governmental organization UPR Info organized a workshop in Lalitpur on August 23, 2022, on the implementation and process monitoring plan of the recommendations accepted by Nepal in the Universal Periodic Review (UPR).
Starting the workshop, INSEC’s Executive Director Bijay Raj Gautam said that the workshop will help to enhance the cooperation and capacity of civil society organizations to implement the suggestions accepted by the Nepal government in the UPR and to monitor the process.
Presenting the program schedule of the workshop, Gautam requested all the participants to actively participate and formulate a useful monitoring plan.
The Deputy Secretary of the National Human Rights Commission, Manju Khatiwada, said that the repetition of the suggestions that Nepal will receive in the UPR shows the weakness in the state of implementation.
The representative of the United Nations Development Program, Tek Tamata, said that civil society organizations should organize the collection of facts and data related to human rights and make the concerns presented in the UPR report comprehensive and factual.
To improve the overall human rights implementation situation through the process of UPR, Tamata suggested strengthening mutual dialogue between the government of Nepal, national human rights organizations and civil society organizations.
In the workshop, the representative of UPR Info, Nargiz Arupova, said that the critical feedback and suggestions presented by the civil society organizations at the international level in the process of UPR will play an important role in the suggestions received by the member states through review.
Since the role of civil society organizations in each country is also important in implementing the suggestions received in the UPR, Arupova emphasized that civil organizations’ representatives should continuously participate in the process.
Fifty representatives of civil society organizations for UPR have participated in the two-day workshop.
