Over Crowding of the Jail Causing Health Problems

According to the Rupendeahi, Prison Administration, inmates/detainees in the district jail are facing various health problems due to the over crowding of the jail.
Although the capacity of the prison is 150, the prison is obligated to hold detainees and inmates over the capacity.  This has deprived the inmates of their basic rights.
According to the Acting Head of Rupandehi District Jail, Ramesh Nepal, at present, there are 437 prisoners in the district jail. Out of which 143 are inmates and 294 detainees.
According to the prison administration, there are two times more inmates/prisoners than the capacity in the physical structure, and there is difficulty in keeping more prisoners than the capacity. This has led to various problems like skin infections, and ringworm. During the summer, inmates have been forced to wait for their turn to sit and sleep. Chronically ill patients are being denied physical examination.
The Acting Head, Nepal, said that even though initiatives are being taken to solve the problems in the prisons, it has not been resolved yet. He further adds that the 700 grams of rice and allowance of 60 rupees given to the prisoners/prisoners daily are not enough because of inflation.
