The Government of Nepal launched the student enrollment campaign on April 12 with the slogan, Participation of All Children in School, Ensuring Access to Quality Education. Despite the commencement of the campaign, teachers and staff from community schools across the country are currently protesting in Kathmandu, under the banner of the Nepal Teachers’ Federation, raising various demands. As a result, the government’s nationwide student enrollment program has been affected. Teachers from all over Nepal have been continuously protesting in Kathmandu since April 2. Although there have been discussions between the government and the federation, they have reached an agreement.
At the recommendation of the Council of Ministers, Hon. President Ramchandra Paudel has summoned a session of both houses of the Federal Parliament for 1 PM on April 25. In a video message issued on April 16, Minister for Education Bidya Bhattarai mentioned that the parliamentary session has been called to address the demands of the teachers. She stated that discussions are ongoing with the teachers and that a facilitation committee has been formed on behalf of the Ministry to carry forward the discussions.
The Minister for Communication and Information Technology, Prithvi Subba Gurung, stated that the government is sensitive to the demands of the teachers. He mentioned that, in order to address their legitimate demands, the government has called the budget session through the President on April 25.
Under the leadership of the Nepal Teachers’ Federation, teachers from across the country have been staging sit-in protests daily from 12 PM to 3 PM in Maitighar, Babarmahal, and Baneshwor areas.
