An interaction program celebrating the 114th International Women’s day with the coordination of INSEC and the National Human Rights Commission was held on the eve of International Women’s Day in Lalitpur on 7 march. During the program, the participants emphasized that women’s access to resources should be increased to reduce the incidence of violence against women.
Chairperson Tapa Bahadur Magar of National Human Rights Commission said that it is necessary to spread awareness in the society regarding human rights and judicial process. He expressed his concern toward the incidents of violence women and girls are being victimized by their families and relatives.
Similarly, Lilly Thapa, of the Human Rights Commission, stressed the importance of empowering women to eliminate discrimination. She emphasized the need to invest in enhancing the capacity and efficiency of women. Likewise, Manoj Dawadi, also from the commission, highlighted the necessity to increase women’s access to resources.
During the program, Dr. Kundan Aryal, Chairperson of INSEC, emphasized the importance of constitutional commissions to focus on protecting victims. He said that the confidentiality regarding the identity of the victim is often overlooked when disseminating information about incidents. This causes more pain to the victim and the victim’s family. Stressing the importance of maintaining confidentiality, he asked all stakeholders to pay attention to this matter.
Bijayaraj Gautam, the Executive Director of INSEC, said that maintaining the rights of women is important for social reform. During the program, information was presented regarding the facts and statistics of women and girl victims recorded by INSEC in 2023.
The report issued by INSEC on 7 March mentions that, in 2023 there were 4,963 victims of domestic violence, 25 of of accusations of witchcraft, 651 of rape, 152 of attempted rape, and 54 women were victims of sexual abuse. Among the 1,446 girl victims, 1002 were the victims of rape, 373 of sexual abuse, 43 of trafficking and 28 were the victims of child marriage.
The 114th International Women’s Day is being celebrated nationwide with the slogan, ‘Investment in women: the beginning of a civilized and advanced society.’ This day is celebrated all over the world on 8 March.
