Locals Imposed School Lockdown: Disruption in Education

After the attendance file of Devkota Basic School located in Sarkegad rural municipality-3 Unapani was taken away by the ward office, the residents of the Rural Municipality  locked the school on March 4. Consequently, the educational activities of the school have been affected.

Principal Dharma Fadera informed that the school was locked after the ward office took the attendance file from the office assistant on the evening of March 3. He added that the locals were up to locking the school due to the Ward Office taking the attendance of classes 1 to 8 without showing any reason.

Lakshman Karki, a local resident said that he along with 17 people had registered their candidacy for the post of chairperson of the management committee for the formation of the school management committee on March 3. He added that when he asked the Principal the attendance file to gather information about the number of students in the school for his candidacy, he found that the register file was at a local’s house.

The principal mentioned that when attempting to inquire about the school’s attendance file from Ward Chairperson Akal Bahadur Karki of Sarkegad Rural Municipality-3, he even hung up the phone saying that he will talk about it later.

The Right to Information Act, 2007 ensures that any Nepali citizen has the right to obtain information easily. However, the Ward Chairperson of Ward No. 3 disobeyed the human rights activists and did not provide the information.
