Police arrested 34-year-old Kamal Tamang, resident of Pokhara Metropolitan City-27, currently residing in Kathmandu-8, Guhreshwari Panchkanya Marg, on the charge of human trafficking and transportation of 26-year-old men and other victims on July 24.
The victims lodged a complaint with Nepal Police’s Human Trafficking Investigation Bureau on July 20, stating that the accused enticed them with false promises of taking them to the United States via illegal routes. Instead, they were taken to Gulf countries and other nations, where they were held captive, subjected to torture, and extorted for ransom.
Nepal Police Human Trafficking Investigation Bureau’s Chief, SSP Jeevan Kumar Shrestha, provided information stating that the accused, under the pretext of taking the victims to the United States from Nepal, coerced and deceived them into traveling to various countries, including New Delhi (India), Sri Lanka, Dubai, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, Philippines, Thailand, Laos, and Zambia, and subjected to further exploitation, demanding additional money. As per Shrestha’s statement, Tamang defrauded the victims of NPR 2,26,23,000 (Two Crore Twenty-Six Lakh and Twenty-Three Thousand Rupees).
SSP Shrestha stated that the Kathmandu District Court has detained the accused for five days, as per the provisions of the Human Trafficking and Transportation (Control) Act, 2064, and the investigation has commenced.
