The District Jail in Seraphat, Besisahar has been closed after reconstruction could not proceed due to a lack of budget, and 109 inmates have been transferred to other prisons.
Acting Jailer Prisa Gautam of Lamjung District Prison said that, according to a report prepared by the Building Construction and Development Office, Kaski, the estimated cost for reconstruction is Rs. 177.4 million, and the proposal has been submitted to the concerned authorities.
The prison was constructed in 1971/72. At present, there are no inmates in the facility. The position of accounts officer remains vacant, while six staff members are currently employed at the prison. Chief District Officer Krishna Prasad Khanal said the prison building has become so dilapidated that it cannot be operated through routine repairs. He added that keeping inmates outside the district has increased the time, manpower, and expenses required to produce them before the court, facilitate family visits, and carry out other administrative tasks.
