The death of Nani Kami, 40, of Raya village, Ward No. 3 of Kharpunath Rural Municipality, 20 days after giving birth, has left her newborn twin infants in a vulnerable situation.
According to Lal Dhan Tamata, a relative of the deceased, the family’s extremely poor economic condition prevented Nani from receiving adequate nutrition, medical treatment, and proper postpartum care, which contributed to her death. He stated that she was unable to access nutritious food and lacked adequate warmth and safe living conditions to protect her from the cold during the postpartum period.
Dr. Umakanta Tiwari, Chief of the Health Service Office in Humla, reported that Nani died due to severe pneumonia. Local residents said that although she had been ill for several days, financial hardship prevented her from seeking timely treatment at a health facility.
Following Nani’s death, serious concerns have emerged regarding the care and upbringing of her twin infants. Locals reported that the head of the household is also in poor health, creating additional challenges in providing proper care for the newborns.
Karna Bahadur Rawal, Chairperson of Kharpunath Rural Municipality, stated that the twins are currently being cared for with support from local residents. However, he emphasized that further assistance is urgently needed to ensure their survival and proper upbringing and appealed for support from concerned individuals and organizations.
Nani Kami had previously given birth to five children. The incident, driven by poverty, inadequate nutrition, and limited access to healthcare, highlights the continuing challenges of maternal and child health services in Nepal’s remote regions.
