Accused Sentenced to Life Imprisonment for Killing Senior Citizen

Lakshmi Chaudhary, 36 of Khadak Municipality-11, Banauli has been sentenced to life imprisonment on June 23 for killing 70-year-old Umawati Chaudhary in the same place. The bench of District Court Judge Umanath Gautam sentenced the accused to life imprisonment and ordered a compensation of Rs 150,000 to be paid to the nominee of the victim.

The 21-year-old son of the deceased, Krishna Kant Choudhary, filed a complaint at the Area Police Office in Kalyanpur on January 21, alleging that Umawati was fatally beaten by the accused on the evening of January 20.

Bramhadev Choudhary, another son of the deceased, filed a complaint at the District Police Office, Morang on January 26. He stated that the accused came to the victim’s house and insulted the family, causing a commotion that led neighbors to intervene and separate them during the first incident. Additionally, the accused returned a second time and hit the victim on the head with a wooden object. Subsequently, Umawati died on 26 January during intensive treatment at Neuro Cardio & Multispecialty Hospital, Biratnagar after being treated at Jivanjyoti Hospital in Bodebarsain Municipality.

The postmortem of the body was done on January 26 at Koshi Hospital in Biratnagar. Umawati’s younger son, 17-year-old Bikram Choudhary, also sustained an injury on his forehead during the fight and was treated at the Primary Health Center in Kalyanpur on January 24.

Lakshmi was arrested on January 21. Saptari Police reported that a complaint was initially registered at the Area Police Office Kalyanpur on January 22 for attempted killing. Subsequently, the case was later converted to a case of killing on January 26 following Umawati’s death.

Since the charge sheet was filed in the District Court on February 13, the accused was detained in Rajbiraj Jail from February 14, as ordered by the bench of Judge Shyam Bihari Maurya.
