Tara Baral Postpones 136-day-long Hunger Strike

Tara Baral has postponed her 136-day-long hunger strike on March 30, 2022, in the presence of the representatives of National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) and Civil Society Organizations. She had started the hunger strike on November 16, 2021.

Baral has postponed her strike in the presence of Chief District Officer of Kathmandu Govinda Rijal, SSP Sudip Gari of Metropolitan Police Range Kathmandu, Deputy Secretary of NHRC Manju Khatiwada, Sita Upreti from NHRC and Krishna Gautam, Charan Prasai, Indra Prasad Aryal, Mahamunishwar Acharya and Pushpadevi Tamang on behalf of civil society.

She had initiated the hunger strike demanding six-point demands including against the Millennium Challenge Compact (Nepal Compact), for the dismissal of the Citizenship Act, for the dismissal of federalism as Bagmati, Gandaki and Karnali provinces have not been given trade gateway with India, to completely stop politics in Supreme Court, to end of misbehaviour of women and immediate implementation of the policy of land.

Baral agreed to postpone the strike considering the repeated requests of the National Human Rights Commission and the civil society, considering that the country is heading towards a serious economic crisis and the country is heading to elections.

Speaking after the agreement, Kathmandu’s Chief District Officer Govinda Rijal expressed his support for Baral’s medical treatment and conveyed her demands to the government.
