Conflict victims sent a letter to Secretary-General António Guterres through the United Nations Office in Nepal, urging the Government of Nepal to address their demands.
Minister of Foreign Affairs Narayan Khadka had said at the 76th General Assembly of the United Nations that the government was committed to concluding the transitional justice process through the Truth and Reconciliation Commission and the Commission of Investigation on Enforced Disappeared Persons.
Speaking at the General Assembly in New York on September 27, 2021, Minister Khadka stated that those involved in the serious human rights violations during the period of conflict will not get amnesty.
The conflict victims of Nepal have sent a letter to Secretary-General António Guterres on September 30, 2021, saying that nothing has been done according to what Minister Khadka mentioned previously.
The letter was handed over to the UN representative in Nepal by Maina Karki, Chairperson of Conflict Victims Common Platform Nepal, on behalf of 40 organizations of the conflict victims.
Through the letter the victims have requested the Secretary General of the United Nations to draw the attention of the Government of Nepal on four main issues. They have called for a comprehensive public consultation to amend the Act of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission and to investigate on Enforced Disappearances
Also, it has been asked to appoint new commissioners for the commissions in a transparent and credible manner only after the amendment of the Act, to publish the schedule for the consultation and amendment process and to implement it. They have also urged to call on the United Nations to provide technical assistance to ensure impartiality and independence of the established bodies.
