A signature campaign was organized in provincial capital Birendranagar of Surkhet on August 30 to pressurize government for the ratification of International Convention for the protection of all person from enforced disappearance -2006. The campaign was organized to mark the international day of the enforced disappearance.
The campaign was jointly organized by INSEC Karnali province office, Amnesty international, Nepal lawyers association and Single women for human rights on August 30. Prior to the signature campaign, a rally started from Mangalgadhi Chok.
Speaking at the campaign in Birendrachok, coordinator Narayan Subedi of INSEC Karnali province office said that it is unfortunate that state has failed to inform the families of disappeared about their whereabouts till now despite of their commitment in CPA.
Coordinator Subedi said that 80 people from Karnali province were disappeared by state and 13 by non-state during the armed conflict era.
In the program, coordinator Hari Lal Khadka of amnesty international Nepal Lawyers association including other rights activists stressed that government must approve the covenant regarding the protection of disappeared people.
The signature campaign was participated by conflict victims family, rights activists, legal entrepreneurs, civil society, media personnel, vendors and teachers. Similarly, candle light vigil program will be organized in the evening in the name of disappeared people during the armed conflict.
