Over 170 Inmates of Nawalparasi District Prison Still at Large

According to jail authorities, 173 inmates who escaped from the Nawalparasi District Prison during protests by the youth movement on September 11, 2025, have yet to return. The remaining absconders include 29 women and 144 men. Among them are 38 Indian nationals, comprising three women and 35 men.

During the unrest, 546 inmates broke out of the prison after vandalizing its facilities. Of those, 369 inmates, 46 women, and 323 men have already returned, while four male inmates have reported to other correctional facilities, according to prison administration officials.

The district jail has an official capacity of 175 inmates, including 150 men and 25 women. However, it currently houses a total of 425 inmates, consisting of 63 women and 362 men, highlighting severe overcrowding within the facility.
