The protest of September 9 amounted to a loss of government property worth more than NPR 21,00,00,000 in Surkhet alone. As per the details submitted to the Damage Assessment Committee, losses amounting to NPR 211,969,345 have been recorded which excludes the offices of political parties and private houses. According to the data report from the District Administration Office, damages to the physical structures, equipemnet, and other assets belonging to the federal, provincial, and local government offices have been included with Birendranagar Municipality suffering the highest damage. As mentioned by the Chief of IT Section of the municipality, damage to the municipality office, ward offices from 1-12, and the city hall alone amounted to more than NPR 11,00,00,000. He stated the total assessed loss was around NPR 11,00,00,000.
The Karnali Provincial Assembly Secretariat suffered the second-highest loss, with damage estimated at NPR 39,416,394. The office reported damage to buildings and rooms, furniture and fixtures, computers and electronics, vehicles, and consumables. The Land Revenue Office incurred damages worth NPR 26,360,990, including buildings, rooms, furniture, vehicles, and important documents destroyed. The Provincial Controller of Accounts Office reported a loss of NPR 13,216,061, with government documents, vehicles, computers, furniture, and office buildings damaged.
Similarly, the Office of the Chief Minister and Council of Ministers, including the Chief Minister’s residence, recorded damage amounting to NPR 1,79,000. The Office of the Attorney General suffered losses worth NPR 11,460,000. The District Coordination Committee reported damages of NPR 403,000, the Road Division Office reported NPR 204,000, the Bheri Corridor Irrigation and River Management Project reported NPR 60,000, the Bheri-Babai Diversion Multipurpose Project reported NPR 410,000, and the Ministry of Social Development reported NPR 359,900 in damages.
According to Laxmi Prasad Baskota, Chief Administrative Officer of Birendranagar Municipality, damage assessments of the municipality and its subordinate structures have already been submitted. During the protest in Surkhet, a total of 44 physical structures were damaged through vandalism and arson, including five political party offices, eight private houses, and 28 government structures.
The government had formed a Damage Assessment Committee under the coordination of the Assistant Chief District Officer of the District Administration Office. Chief District Officer of Surkhet, Jagdishwar Upadhyay, stated that the collection of details regarding government office damages is in its final stage, and preparations are now underway to assess the damages to private houses and political party offices.
