Thirty-five Escaped Inmates Remain Out of Contact in Karnali Province

Of the inmates who escaped from prisons in two districts during the 9 September protest, 35 remain missing. According to Rukum west district representative Jiwan Khadka, of the 88 escapees, 64 have been apprehended, while 24 are still missing as of 23 September. Similarly, Jumla representative Mandatta Rawal reported that of the 41 escapees, 30 have been re-arrested, leaving 11 still at large as of 23 September.

As of 9 September, Rukum west Jail having a capacity of 25 inmates (5 women and 20 men), was housing 158 inmates. Similarly, Jumla Jail with a capacity of 200 inmates (80 women and 120 men), had 97 inmates as of the same date.

Although the local administration has intensified the search for the escaped inmates, they have not yet been found. While some inmates voluntarily came into police custody, most have been arrested and returned to jail. Authorities have issued a public notice appealing to citizens to assist in the search and report any contact with the escaped inmates. Security at the jail is being provided by a joint team of the Nepal Police, Armed Police Force, and the Nepali Army.
