During the protest organized by the new generation youth (Gen Z) in Kathmandu on 8 September against corruption, mismanagement, and the government’s decision to shut down social media, 17 people injured in the demonstration have died while undergoing treatment. According to the Ministry of Health, among the deceased, three died at Civil Hospital, eight at the National Trauma Center, three at Everest Hospital, two at KMC Hospital, and one at Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital, totaling 17 deaths.
Among those who died while undergoing treatment at the Trauma Center were Sulabharaj Shrestha, 21, of Banke, Shriram Chaulagain, 19, whose address has not been confirmed, Buddhi Bahadur Tamang, 42, of Kirtipur; Gaurav Joshi, 28, with an unidentified address; and Saurav Katuwal, 24, also with an unidentified address. Similarly, SP Suman Kumar Timilsina of Sunsari District Police Office confirmed in a conversation with INSEC Sunsari representative that during the Gen Z protest in Itahari, Sunsari, police firing resulted in the deaths of two individuals and left 10 others injured. SP Timilsina stated that two individuals injured by police gunfire were taken to BP Koirala Institute of Health Sciences in Dharan for treatment, but the doctors declared them dead.
Among the two who died from injuries sustained in the police firing during the protest in Itahari, Sunsari, one was identified as Abhishek Shrestha, 23, from Itahari Sub-Metropolitan City-16, according to Police Inspector Prakash Parajuli of the District Police Office. During the protest in Baneshwor, journalists were injured by police gunfire, including Shyam Shrestha of Kantipur Television, Dipendra Dhungana of Naya Patrika, Umesh Karki of Nepal Press, and independent journalist Shambhu Dangal. More than 400 people were injured in the protest, and they are receiving treatment at various hospitals.
To control the protests, the District Administration Office, Kathmandu, has imposed a curfew around Baneshwor, Singha Durbar, Baluwatar, and Sheetal Niwas. The government has lifted the restrictions on social media. Minister of Information and Communications Technology, Prithvi Subba Gurung, informed that the Cabinet meeting held on 8 September decided to reopen social media platforms.
