Surkhet High Court Sees High Number of Rape Cases

The Jumla bench of the Surkhet High Court has recorded the highest number of rape cases. A total of 62 rape cases have been filed at the bench. The jurisdiction of the Jumla bench of Surkhet covers five districts in the Upper Karnali, Jumla, Kalikot, Mugu, Dolpa, and Humla. A total of 34 writs, 14 attempted killing cases, 10 killing cases, five polygamy cases, two divorce cases, four vehicular killing cases, two cases of physical injury, and five cases related to human trafficking have been filed. Additionally, there are two caste-based discrimination cases, 14 drug-related cases, 19 theft cases, four property cases, and 40 other cases registered.

According to recent data by the Jumla bench of the Surkhet High Court, 93.08 % of the total cases registered in the fiscal year 2024/2025 have been settled. During this period, 191 new cases were filed, and 26 were transferred. Although the annual target for decisions was 178, more cases than the target have been resolved. Comparing three fiscal years from 2022/2023 to 2024/2025, the highest number of cases were decided in the fiscal year 2024/2025. The data indicates that the judicial performance of the High Court Surkhet Jumla Bench has been becoming more effective.

Similarly, in the last fiscal year, out of 43 cases involving detainees, 40 were decided. Chief Judge of the High Court Surkhet Jumla Bench, Shyamji Pradhan, stated that efforts are being made to make the judicial process more citizen-friendly. He also mentioned that all mechanisms of the court are being mobilized from virtual depositions to swift delivery of justice to ensure easier access for the public to the judiciary. The lowest number of cases were registered at the Humla District Court, with only 69 cases recorded. Of these, 60 cases have been decided while nine remain pending. Following that, the Dolpa District Court registered 76 cases, of which 54 have been decided and 22 are still pending.

In Mugu, out of 135 registered cases, 103 have been decided while 32 remain pending. At the Kalikot District Court, a total of 236 cases were registered, of which 176 have been decided and 61 are pending. Similarly, at the Jumla District Court, 314 cases were registered, with 214 decided and 100 still pending.
