Prisoners Suffering Due to Delayed in Reconstruction of District Jail

The inmates of the Chautara District Jail are facing difficulties as the men’s cell has not yet been reconstructed after it was destroyed by the earthquake on April 25, 2015.

Jailer Ram Bahadur Sarki informed us that 138 male prisoners and detainees are currently housed in the women’s cell, which has a capacity of only nine people. Only men were accommodated in the women’s cell after the earthquake.

Bharat Dhungana, one of the inmates, said there are 95 prisoners and 43 detainees accommodated in the prison, which has caused them to line up for the toilet and take turns to eat. Dhungana added that it’s hard to move around inside the prison due to this situation.

Jailer Ram Bahadur Sarki mentioned that despite informing higher authorities multiple times about the need for prison reconstruction, the work has not yet started. He also informed the INSEC representative that he had no information about the construction, as the entire responsibility for building the new prison lies with the Ministry.
