Investigation Committee Formulated For Teku and Sankhuwasabha Incidents

The government has established a comprehensive five-member investigation committee tasked with probing the utilization of force by the police during a sit-in event outside the District Police Complex in Kathmandu on August 2nd. The protesters were advocating for the arrest of Advocate Bhagwati Pandey based on her statements. During the altercation between the Tamang and Magar communities at the District Police Complex in Teku, more than seven protestors suffered injuries.

According to the Home Ministry’s spokesperson, Joint Secretary Narayan Prasad Bhattarai, the newly formed investigation committee, led by Deputy Secretary Ram Bahadur Shahi, has been allocated a 10-day period to diligently assess the circumstances surrounding the injured individuals and subsequently furnish a comprehensive report. The committee is composed of representative members hailing from the District Administration Office in Kathmandu, Valley Police Office, and National Investigation Department.

Furthermore, the Ministry of Home Affairs has taken the initiative to establish an additional five-member investigation committee, headed by Kamal Prasad Pandey, the Director of the Prison Management Department. This committee has been entrusted with the responsibility of investigating and subsequently providing a detailed report concerning the untimely demise of Akash Balami, also known as Binod Tolangi, and Bikas Shrestha—both inmates of the Sankhuwasabha Prison Office—on August 9th.

The committee’s composition will incorporate representative members from the Nepal Police, the National Investigation Department, as well as the District Administration Office in Sankhuwasabha and the Prison Office in Sankhuwasabha. Similar to the previous committee, a 10-day timeframe has been allotted for the thorough examination of facts and the subsequent submission of the investigative report.
