Two people were injured due to police firing in a clash between protestors and police in Damak Jhapa on May 10, 2023. The protestors were demonstrating against the name of the previous Province No. 1 to Karnalai Province. They demanded the renaming of the province.
Dipenwala Rai, coordinator of the struggle committee Jhapa informed INSEC representative that, Gajendra Fago of Ilam Chulachuli, and Nirmala Baral Lingden of Jhapa Brtamod, were the individuals injured in police firing.
Coordinator Rai said that Fago was shot in the leg by the police, and Lingden was hit by shrapnel.
Both the injured people are being treated at B&C Hospital in Birtamod, Jhapa.
District Police Office Jhapa DSP, Khagendra Prasad Rizal, said 10 policemen, including DSP Manoj Kumar Lama of District Police Office Damak, were injured in the clash with the protestors.
According to the police, the injured are treated at a local health institution.
Although it has been confirmed that the protestors and the police were injured in the clash, their exact details have not been publicized.
Two-thirds of the provincial assembly voted to name the then Province No. 1 Koshi Province, on March 1, 2023.
The Province government published a notice in the province gazette on March 2, naming it as Koshi province.
Protests have been going on since March 2, demanding the cancellation of the name and the naming it Kirant Province.
