INSEC Monitoring Impact: Women Inmates Started Using Sanitary Pads

As a result of the monitoring of the Informal Area Service Center (INSEC) Gandaki Provincial Office, women inmates in Parbat District Jail have started using sanitary pads.

During the monitoring conducted on November 17, 2022, at Parbat District Prison,  women inmates complained to the INSEC team that they were not allowed to use sanitary pads during their periodic menstrual cycle.

Mina Chhetri complained about the inaccessibility of sanitary pads to the monitoring team led by  Shiva Khakurel, the Coordinator of INSEC Gandaki Provincial Office, Pokhara. The monitoring team immediately requested the local prison administration to resolve the issue.

Jailer, Sheela Shrestha, said that according to the request of INSEC, the prison administration provided sanitary pads to the women.

She said the prison hadn’t provided sanitary napkins due to waste management problems. However, the prison management has decided to dispose the used sanitary napkins by burying them.

There are four women prisoners in the Parbat prison.
