Police arrested Sumitra Sendang on May 15, on charges of beating a four-year-old child 18 times for not being able to write numbers and letters.
According to Inspector Ramchandra Sah of the District Police Office, the incident took place on May 13, at New Lungerupa Boarding School located in Bhanjyang, Phidim Municipality–14, where the accused allegedly beat the LKG student for not knowing numbers and letters. The accused was arrested for investigation.
Inspector Sah also stated that a case was filed in the District Court on May 16 for investigation under the child offence case.
Following the beating, bruises were seen on the child’s back, and the victim’s family admitted the child to Ganeshman Singh Community Hospital on May 15 for treatment.
After the child was admitted to the hospital, the news of the beating became public.
School operator Sangyog Saru Magar stated that the accused teacher has been dismissed from the school and that the school will bear the child’s medical expenses.
The victim’s mother, Savitri Nembang, stated that her son refused to go to school and eat, and later revealed during questioning that “Miss” had beaten him.
Ward Chairperson Rajkumar Nembang of Phidim Municipality–14 informed that the incident was first reported to the police on May 15.
