Two Public Schools Closed Due to Low Number of Students

Two community schools in Kanepokhari Rural Municipality have been closed due to a low number of students. Additionally, classes have been reduced in three schools after failing to meet the required student numbers.

According to Chief Administrative Officer Hirakumari Yadav, Siddhartha Basic School in Ward No. 1 and Thaneshwar Basic School in Ward No. 4 were closed due to insufficient student enrollment.

Classes 4 and 5 have been removed from Laxmi Basic School in Ward No. 3, Panchakanya Basic School in Ward No. 4, and Suntoli Basic School in Ward No. 6.

Thaneshwar Basic School had a total of only six students from early childhood development (ECD) to Grade 5. The school had one permanent teacher and one ECD teacher. Both teachers and students have been assigned to Janata Basic School in the same ward.

Although Thaneshwar Basic School had approval to run classes up to Grade 5, teaching was being conducted only up to Grade 3.

Siddhartha Basic School in Ward No. 1, which had nine students, has been merged into Shree Secondary School, Hoklabari, in the same ward. The school, which operated from ECD to Grade 5, had three teachers and two ECD staff members, all of whom have also been adjusted to Shree Secondary School, Hoklabari.

At Laxmi Basic School in Ward No. 3 and Panchakanya Basic School in Ward No. 4, teaching for Grades 4 and 5 has been discontinued.

Laxmi Basic School had a total of six students across two classes, while Panchakanya Basic School had nine students in two classes. Among the three teachers and two ECD staff at Laxmi Basic School, along with six students, they have been transferred to Bal Secondary School in the same ward. Similarly, one teacher position and nine students from Panchakanya Basic School have also been adjusted to Bal Secondary School.

At Suntoli Basic School in Dahidhap, Ward No. 6, classes 4 and 5 have also been removed. There were three students in Grade 4 and two in Grade 5. One teacher position and five students from the school have been adjusted to Panchajyoti Basic School in the same ward.

The decision to merge and consolidate schools was made during the Education Committee meeting held on May 27, 2025, attended by Rural Municipality Chairperson Rajmati Ingnaam, Vice-Chairperson Bholaprasad Adhikari, Chief Administrative Officer Hira Kumari Yadav, and Education Section Officer Chudamani Regmi.

The committee has also decided that from the academic year 2026/27 onwards, each class must have at least 10 students.

There are a total of 21 community schools within Kanepokhari Rural Municipality.
