Students Studying in Temporary Sheds for a Year

Students of Kailashpuri Secondary School, located in Pals Village of Adanchuli Rural Municipality–6, have been compelled to study in temporary sheds for the past one year. After the old, dilapidated school building was demolished, teaching and learning activities have been taking place in makeshift structures built with corrugated sheets and wood.

As two of the school buildings had become unsafe and deteriorated, the local community demolished them and constructed temporary shelters for continuation of classes. However, despite repeated requests for the construction of a new building, parent Ganesh Bohara complained that no initiative has been taken by the concerned authorities so far.

According to the school principal, Dal Bahadur Budha, students from Early Childhood Development (ECD) to Grade 8 have been studying in the temporary sheds. Students of Grades 9 and 10 are studying in another dilapidated building, while the school office is also being operated from a structure in poor condition.

Students have been adversely affected by the conditions in the sheds, as rainwater leaks during the monsoon and excessive heat during sunny weather makes learning difficult.

Ward Chairperson of Adanchuli Rural Municipality–6, Birkha Bahadur Budha, stated that the damage caused by the earthquake a year ago has forced students to continue their studies in temporary structures.

According to Chairperson Budha, although the rural municipality has allocated Rs. 4 million for the reconstruction of the school under the President’s Educational Reform Program, it is likely to take more time for the construction to begin. Similarly, Rural Municipality Chairperson Mohan Bikram Singh stated that preparations are underway to sign the agreement for the allocated budget. However, parents have expressed dissatisfaction as students have been studying in temporary sheds for the past year. Currently, 322 students are enrolled in the school.
