Doctor involved in abortion-related death case suspended

The Nepal Medical Council has suspended Dr. Satis Kumar Rupakheti, who was involved in the treatment of Gita Pandey, 29, who was reported to have died due to medical negligence during an abortion procedure.

According to the Registrar, Dr. Satis Kumar Dev, the council’s online meeting held on April 25 decided to suspend Ruapkheti until the final investigation report is submitted, based on the recommendation of the inquiry committee. The council stated that the doctor has been barred from examining patients under the ‘Code of Medical Ethics 2017’.

Preliminary investigations have shown that both Jonal Pharmacy and Indulekha Health Clinic, which were involved in Pandey’s treatment, were operating without the necessary approvals. The council has decided to request the District Administration Office to shut down these institutions and has also recommended action against the involved health workers.

The committee’s 26-page report has pointed out technical errors in treatment as well as institutional weaknesses. It has also suggested strengthening monitoring mechanisms and regulating and registering health institutions that are operating illegally. Furthermore, it has been concluded that there is a trend of unlicensed clinic operations and provision of services beyond permitted limits in the Butwal area.

The council has stated that it will make a final decision based on further investigation and the ongoing police inquiry. It has also indicated that criminal charges may be applicable based on the findings.

Pandey, a resident of Bagnaskali-2 Palpa, died on April 19, while undergoing an abortion procedure at more than 12 weeks of pregnancy. Following the incident, the council formed an investigation committee led by Dr. Samrat Parajuli.
