Inmate Injured in Attack by Jail Watchman

On the night of March 7, at Morang District Prison located in Biratnagar Metropolitan City–8, two inmates were injured after a watchman attacked prisoners who were sleeping with a katti (khukuri-like cutting weapon ).

Among the injured, one is an Indian national. According to prison administrator Gaurav Dhungel, the injured are Chanchal Barman, 35 from Gauri, Dinajpur, Uttar Pradesh, India, and Sanjay Chaudhary, 28, from Gramthan Rural Municipality–5, Morang.

Barman, who is seriously injured, sustained deep wounds across his face. Chaudhary suffered an injury to his hand. As treatment was not possible at Koshi Hospital, both were taken to Nobel Teaching Hospital in Biratnagar for further medical care.

Prison administrator Dhungel stated that the attack occurred at around 3:00 a.m. while the victims were asleep, when Gopal Danuwar, the watchman of ‘B Block’ of the prison, indiscriminately attacked them with the weapon.

Danuwar, a resident of Urlabari Municipality–1 in Morang, was serving a sentence in a rape case.

According to Morang Police DSP Harinandan Chaudhary, Danuwar was arrested on the same day, March 7, along with the weapon used in the incident, and an investigation into the case has begun.
