Death in Police Custody

Patharishanishchare Municipality–4 residents, Gyanadeep Rai, 23, has died during treatment while in police custody.

Rai, who had been kept in custody at the Area Police Office, Pathari, in connection with a drug-related case, died during treatment on January 20 at Nobel Hospital in Biratnagar, police said.

District Police Office DSP Harinandhan Chaudhary stated that Rai, who was kept in police custody for investigation in a drug case, died during the course of medical treatment.

While in police custody for investigation, Rai fell ill and was admitted on January 16 to Madan Bhandari Hospital and Trauma Center, Urlabari–Mangalbare.

According to DSP Chaudhary, Madan Bhandari Hospital and Trauma Center referred him to Nobel Hospital on January 20, and Rai died during treatment at Nobel Hospital.

DSP Chaudhary further said that the body has been kept at Nobel Hospital, and preparations are underway to hand it over once the victim’s family arrives.
