Khukuri Attack Upon Teacher

Rajendra Rai, a teacher of Jiwan Jyoti Secondary School, in Silichong Rural Municipality-4, Mantewa, was attacked with a khukuri on October 2. Inspector Ram Kumar Lamichhane of the District Police Office stated that the attack was carried out by approximately Surendra Rai,24 and a 17-year-old boy from the same area, who were under the influence of alcohol . Police reported that Rai sustained injuries to his head, hands, and various parts of his body by the attack. As he was critically injured and could not be treated at Sankhuwasabha District Hospital, he was referred to Neuro Hospital in Biratnagar on October 3 for further treatment.

Police reported that Surendra and Amir have been arrested and the investigation is ongoing. The incident site is about a day’s walking distance from Khandbari to the district headquarters. According to the 1998 Declaration on Human Rights Defenders, teachers are defined as human rights defenders.
