Vandalism and Arson in Karnali Province: 60 Structures and 45 Vehicles Damaged

Protesters in various districts of Karnali Province vandalized and set fire to a total of 60 structures, including government, private offices, as well as 45 vehicles, both government and private during the Gen-Z protest on 9 September. Among the 10 districts, Surkhet, Jumla, Kalikot, Mugu, and Dolpa faced extreme vandalism and arson targeting government offices, organizations, political party offices, government residences, and private residences of public representatives. In Jajarkot, Humla, Dailekh, Salyan, and Rukum West no incidents of damage to public or private property were reported, according to monitoring conducted by INSEC.

Protesters vandalized and set fire to several public offices in the provincial capital, Birendranagar, Surkhet, including the Karnali Provincial Assembly, City Hall, Birendranagar Municipality Office, Survey Office, Provincial Auditor General’s Office, District Coordination Committee Office, Jhupra Water Supply Office, Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority (CIAA) Office, Chief Minister and Council of Ministers’ Office, Chief Attorney’s Office, Ward Offices No. one to 12 of Birendranagar Municipality, High Government Attorney Office, Bheri-Babai Diversion Multipurpose Project Office, Office of the Department of Industry and Consumer Protection, Shrikrishna and General Secondary Schools, residences of the Chief Minister, Minister of Agriculture, and Minister of Physical Infrastructure, Himalayan Library Birendranagar, and the Nepal Red Cross Society, Bhairavsthan Sub-branch, among other public offices.

They vandalized and set fire to the party offices of Nepali Congress, CPN-UML, Maoist Centre, Rastriya Prajatantra Party, and Janamorcha. Similarly, the residences of Nepali Congress Vice-Chairperson Purna Bahadur Khadka, Chief Minister Yamalal Kandel, Birendranagar Mayor Mohanmaya Dhakal, and Deputy Mayor Nilkantha Khanal, as well as the former director of the Provincial Hospital, Dr. Dambar Khadka, and Bishnu Khadka’s Maya Petrol Pump, were damaged through vandalism and arson. Protesters also vandalized and set fire to the NIC Asia Bank ATM in the Provincial Assembly.

In Surkhet, the arson set by protesters damaged 11 government vehicles and eight motorcycles. Among private vehicles, two cars and five motorcycles were also damaged. Similarly, in Jumla, protesters vandalized and set fire to a total of six offices, including one government office and five party offices. They also vandalized and set fire to eight government vehicles and 11 motorcycles. Protesters additionally caused damage to ambulances, hearses, and fire trucks.

Similarly, in Kalikot, protesters vandalized and set fire to seven party offices, including those of Nepali Congress, CPN-UML, CPN (Maoist Centre), Rastriya Swatantra Party, Samajbadi Party, Nepal Majdoor Kisan Party, and Rastriya Prajatantra Party.

In Mugu, the protesters vandalized the party offices of the Nepali Congress and CPN-UML. They entered the office of the Mayor of Chhayanath Rara Municipality and burned the photographs of the President and the Prime Minister. Similarly, on 9 September, in Tripurasundari Municipality-1, Tripurakot Bagar of Dolpa, the protesters pelted stones and vandalized a local house that was being used as the office of the Nepali Congress municipal committee.
