On 9 September, expressing solidarity with the GenZ protest, inmates and detainees at Jhumka Jail, Ramdhuni Municipality-5, got out of the jail. According to jail chief Subash Lamichhane 1,798 inmates and detainees inside the jail started rioting on the evening of 9 September, threatening to set the jail on fire, after which the inmates escaped.
After the Nepal Police and Armed Police deployed for the jail security informed the administration that the situation had gone out of control, from 5 pm onwards on 9 September, inmates and detainees began leaving the jail in groups of 5 to 10. The jail administration sought the help of the Nepali Army for security. However, as the Army did not arrive on time, more than 900 inmates and detainees escaped from the jail before 10:15 p.m. on 9 September
Jail Chief Lamichhane stated that after the Nepali Army arrived at 10:20 p.m. on 9 September, more than 500 inmates and detainees were allowed to go outside on the condition that they would return once the situation was under control, with their photos taken in the process. He explained that since rebuilding a jail structure immediately after an arson attack would be impossible, and given the potential loss of life and property, the inmates and detainees were allowed to leave temporarily
In a conversation with the INSEC representative, chief Lamichhane said that after the situation went beyond the control of the jail administration over 500 inmates and detainees were released under the supervision of the Nepali Army. At present only a few inmates and detainees, along with the chief and deputy chief inmates, remain inside the jail. Taking advantage of the GenZ protest, 19 detainees from the Urlabari Area Police Office and 14 detainees from the Pathari Area Police Office have also escaped, though this is yet to be independently confirmed.
