Ilam Jail has been accommodating far more inmates than its capacity. Designed to house only 125 prisoners, it is currently holding 330, including 16 women and 314 men. Among them are nine foreign nationals and five individuals with mental health conditions.
Jail Chief Madhu Bishunkhe stated that although the facility is regarded as a correctional home, overcrowding has increased problems such as the shortage of drinking water. He stated that there are equally serious problems with electricity and toilets. He added that despite making various attempts to resolve them, a complete solution has not been achieved yet. According to Bishunkhe, 138 inmates were released from Ilam Jail in the last fiscal year, while 31 were transferred from other places to Ilam and 13 were transferred out from Ilam.
The Jail administration reported that Ilam Jail currently houses 16 inmates over the age of 60, 21 inmates who require regular medication, and one HIV-positive inmate.
