Police arrested two individuals on August 1 on charges of attempting to traffic seven young women by luring them with false promises of employment in Hong Kong. The trafficked Nepali women who had been taken to Panitanki, India, via the Kakarbhitta border point in Mechinagar Municipality-6, Jhapa were rescued on the same day. Maiti Nepal Koshi Province Coordinator Govinda Ghimire said that Nepali police with the support of Indian Police arrested Japan Gurung, 61, from Makalu Rural Municipality–3, Sankhuwasabha, and Dipesh Gurung, 41, from Toribari, Darjeeling, India, on August 1 for attempting to traffic women.
Authorities are preparing to bring the accused and the rescued women back to Nepal after completing legal procedures under Indian law.
