A joint team of the Informal Sector Service Center (INSEC) and Advocacy Forum monitored the District Jail, Nepalgunj on 25 June.
Jailor Arjun Shah stated that prisoners in the District Jail are facing skin disease problems due to overcrowding exceeding its capacity. He added that there are currently 800 inmates in the district jail, having a capacity of 350 people. This includes 446 prisoners and 354 detainees.
The prisoners are experiencing skin diseases due to extreme heat. Additionally, they have to wait for their turn to use the toilet, live in congested conditions, struggle to sleep, and face issues with access to drinking water.
Jailor Shah mentioned that those with health issues in the jail can move around inside the compound easily. Additionally, arrangements have been made for senior citizens to sit, eat, and sleep according to their age and physical condition.
