Khelanand Das, 33, Municipal Chairperson of Rashtriya Swatantra Party, of Rajbiraj Municipality-7 was beaten up by the suspended Mayor of Rajbiraj Municipality-9,Bhimraj Yadav, 57, his son William Yadav and Gulab Yadav of Rajbiraj Municipality-7 on March 18. .
Das reported that the group of accused attacked him in front of the Global Bank in Rajbiraj Municipality-3 while he was displaying a banner stating that Bhimraj Yadav, the Mayor allegedly involved in corruption, should resign on a city rickshaw. Das has been treated at Chinnamasta Hospital in Rajbiraj Municipality-4. He said that he will file a complaint at the district police office on March 20, demanding action against the accused according to law.
The court found the suspended Mayor Yadav guilty on August 17, 2023 and imposed a fine of Rs 263,468. The Commission for Investigation of Abuse of Authority filed a charge sheet against him and seven others in the special court on July 13, 2022. They were accused of corruption in the upgrade of the stadium by New Gahil Construction during the financial year 2017/18 before he was elected as Mayor. The construction company was owned by Yadav. Mayor Yadav was suspended for corruption less than a month and 21 days after being in the position on May 23, 2022.
After the special court found Yadav guilty of corruption and imposed a fine, he approached the Supreme Court seeking to overturn the decision. Yadav said that it was inappropriate to spread misinformation and influence the court when the case is still ongoing. He added that the act of Khelanand Das protesting was planned to defame him politically which is why the workers got angry and beat Das up.
On the other hand, Das stated that nobody is above the law and taking matters into one’s own hands and resorting to violence is against democracy.
