Political Cadres Attack Journalists

On October 18, a 36-year-old man named Sanjib Bikram Sah, a resident of Dakneshwari Municipality-8, was assaulted by two individuals, 40-year-old Amarendra Yadav from Dakneshwari Municipality-5 and 38-year-old Anil Yadav from Ward No. 6. The assault reportedly occurred due to indecent behavior by Sah.

The attack took place during a gathering related to a protest about a fish pond issue in the municipality. It is alleged that Janamat Party worker Yadav Dwaya planned the attack. In response, the victim’s family filed a complaint against the accused at the district police office on October 19.

The Federation of Nepalese Journalists’ Saptari branch has condemned the attack on Sah, who is also a member of the Saptari branch. The Federation expressed concern that journalists are being subjected to violence by political party workers who claim to support press freedom. They strongly condemned the assault and urged relevant authorities to take legal action against the two assailants. The Federation also warned of potential protests if action is not taken.

In response to the situation, police have provided security for journalist Sah, keeping him safe within the municipal office, as demonstrations related to the pond contract issue continued late into the night, accompanied by stone-throwing incidents. Armed police and Nepal Police were deployed to maintain order, with Inspector Shubhesh Adhikari of Area Police Office Kalyanpur overseeing the situation.
