Pharmacists Arrested For Medical Malpractice

Police arrested 52-year-old Bishnu Kumari Garouza Magar, who operates Prajun Thapa Medical Hall in Byas Municipality-3 Parasartol, and 45-year-old Chandra Bahadur Choudhary, who runs Mitrata Health Clinic in Ansan Chautari, Beas Municipality-3, Dounhia, Bhajani Municipality-6, Kailali District. They were arrested on charges of admitting and treating patients outside their jurisdiction. Choudhary was apprehended from Byas Municipality-3 Damauli on September 28, 2008.

The arrests were made after a monitoring team from the District Administration Office Tanahun, Byas Municipality, Health Office Tanahun, Damauli Hospital, Chamber of Commerce and Industry Tanahun, and the District Police Office found that they were treating patients outside their authorized areas.

During the monitoring, it was discovered that Karonoja Magar examined patients in the pharmacy without registering the clinic under the name of Prajun Thapa Medical Hall. She treated patients through injections. On the other hand, it was revealed that Choudhary’s Mitrata Health Clinic did not have a doctor. He prescribed medicine himself and treated dengue-positive patients with injections, tablets, and antibiotics.

DSP Mohan Bahadur Khand of the District Police Office confirmed the arrests and stated that the Tanahun district court had extended the investigation period by four days for these individuals charged with medical malpractice-related offenses.
