84-year-old Padam Bahadur Shrestha from Umakunda Rural Municipality-6, Rote, who was serving a sentence in Ramechhap Prison, passed away on August 21 while receiving medical treatment.
According to Ruplal Tamang, the head of the prison office in Ramechhap, Shrestha had sustained injuries after falling while going to the toilet on the morning of August 21. He was immediately taken to the district hospital in Ramechhap for treatment but unfortunately passed away on the same day. A post-mortem examination was conducted on August 22 at the same hospital, and his body was subsequently handed over to his family.
Shrestha had previously been accused of raping a 14-year-old and a 16-year-old girl on July 10, 2020. The victims had lodged a complaint against him at the district police office on July 12, 2020. The police arrested Shrestha on July 10, and a case against him was registered in the District Court on July 27. On October 18, 2021, he was sentenced to 6 years and 3 months in prison.
Tamang also mentioned that Shrestha had been dealing with health issues including paralysis and high blood pressure and had been receiving regular medical treatment while in prison.
