In the financial year 2022/23, a total of 113 cases of rape and attempted rape have been adjudicated and dismissed in Saptari, according to the annual report announced by the district court. Out of 154 cases registered last year, only 41 cases remain pending and have been postponed for the current year. Chief District Judge Hemant Rawal mentioned that among the total 154 cases, 130 have been decided, including both newly registered cases and transferred cases.

Regarding human trafficking and smuggling cases, five out of seven cases have been dismissed, with six of them being transferred cases that came under the court’s responsibility. Out of 25 cases of alleged witchcraft, comprising 15 transferred cases and 10 cases registered in the past year, 15 have been dismissed after adjudication.

In cases of domestic violence, 71 have been dismissed after adjudication, while 46 cases are yet to be resolved. The court has 54 old cases and 63 newly registered cases pending.

Regarding murder and attempted murder cases, 140 out of 240 cases have been adjudicated and dismissed. Among these, 144 were old cases whose responsibility was transferred to the court from other courts.

The court stated that there are no cases related to untouchability and caste discrimination.

The dismissal of cases raises concerns about the justice system’s effectiveness in addressing serious crimes, particularly crimes of violence against women and vulnerable communities. It is essential for the judicial system to thoroughly investigate cases and ensure that justice is served to victims while also adhering to due process and respecting human rights.
