Gadadev Basic School of Pancheswar Rural Municipality-1 was destroyed by a landslide after which the students of that school have been compelled to attend classes on the river bank.
The landslide that occurred during the continuous rainfall from October 15, 2021, to October 19, 2021, the building of Gadadev Basic School was destroyed after which the school building has not been reconstructed.
The landslide did not just destroy the building but also the premises of the school, said Principal Nirmala Chand.
She further added that the students were kept on the banks of a nearby river as there was no place for them to stay and study.
The school has been running classes near the banks in the tents provided by the rural municipality.
‘The landslide came from above the school and has destroyed seven classrooms of the school. ‘In this severe winter, the sun rises late in the morning and sets early. Students do not feel like coming to school because of the cold”, said Principal Chand. She added that the three-room building was constructed last year with the assistance of the rural municipality however the four-room building was old.
Gadadev Basic School has 78 students. Teacher Prerna Ghatal said that they have to write on the student’s copy as there is no place to keep the whiteboard while teaching the students in the open space of the river bank.
She adds, “It is very difficult to teach mathematics in the open field. Whiteboard or blackboard is mandatory, however, even the mathematics subject has to be taught in copy. ‘
Gorakh Bahadur Chand, the chairperson of the rural municipality, said that necessary documents for the construction of the school have been collected and sent to the concerned authorities and the rural municipality will provide needed support for the reconstruction of the building.
