DSP Gautam Mishra of the District Police Office informed that Constitutional Assembly (CA) Member Pramod Gupta, 40, of Karaiyamai rural municipality-5 who is also the Central Member of the People’s Socialist Party was arrested along with District Spokesperson of People’s Socialist Party Arun Kumar Singh, 42, of Devatal rural municipality-1. They were arrested in accusation of arson and were sent to Birgunj Jail in Parsa on July 22, 2021.
A case was registered against CA member Gupta and party spokesperson Singh in the district court on September 2, 2015, for setting fire to the vehicle of the Medical Superintendent of the District Hospital Kalaiya during the Madhes movement.
A bench of District Judge Prakash Chandra Adhikari sentenced CA member Gupta and spokesperson Singh to six months imprisonment and fined them NRs. 983,333 each on February 8, 2018.
According to Shrestedar Ghimire, the two have been sent to the District Jail, Birgunj on July 22, 2021. The two were handed over to the police by the district court on July 22 when they went to appear in the court.
During the Madhes movement, Hifazat Miya, 24, of Kalaiya Sub-Metropolitan-7, Rangapur, was shot dead by the police at Bharat Chowk in Kalaiya Sub-Metropolitan -1 on September 1, 2015.
Gupta and Singh were charged for setting fire to the private car of the then Medical Superintendent of Kalaiya Hospital Dr. Shailesh Kumar Jha, 39, of Rajbiraj Municipality-3, Saptari on September 2, 2015, alleging Jha for making wrong post-mortem report of Hifazat Miya. Gupta was elected to the Constituent Assembly from Bara Constituency No. 3.
