Health Workers Beaten, Accused Arrested

Police have arrested Gopal Timilsina, 23, Roshan Pokhrel, 25, and Bhiju Nepali, 21, on the charge of beating Dr Rovish Karki and office assistant Top Bahadur Mijar of Covid Hospital in Tamakoshi Rural Municipality-4. They were arrested on June 13, 2021.

According to SP Bheshraj Rijal of the District Police Office, three of them were arrested immediately after the police received the information regarding the incident that happened on June 12. He further added that the search was ongoing for the one accused that had absconded after the incident.

Ishwar Chandra Pokhrel, Chairperson of the Rural Municipality informed that the accused had entered the hospital at midnight and attacked the doctor after consuming alcohol. They had also pressured him to treat other patients, added Pokhrel.

Dr Karki told the INSEC representative that he was suddenly beaten when he told them not to enter the hospital because there were COVID patients admitted to it and that they would be tested separately if they had any health problems. He further added that he escaped after four people suddenly entered the hospital at midnight and started beating him. He shared that although he was not injured due to the beating, he was petrified and was afraid of what would happen next.

SP Rijal has said that the incident is under investigation and action will be taken according to the law.

Chairperson Pokharel said that misbehaviour on health workers is a sensitive issue and action should be taken accordingly.
