Ashok Kumar Rajbanshi, 40, Senior Health Worker at Koshi Hospital Biratnagar, was beaten by police at Devkota Chowk of Biratnagar Metropolitan-7. He was beaten at around 9 pm on June 1, 2021.
According to Rajbanshi, the police started beating him recklessly without any reason while he was returning home after finishing his duty hours. The victim has sustained injuries on his legs and abdomen.
Rajbanshi said that he was beaten inhumanely by the police at Devkota Chowk while returning home on a motorcycle.
According to Dr Forward Silwal, Chairperson of the Nepal Medical Association, Koshi, it was wrong for the police to beat the health worker even when he saw the health worker with his identity card.
Doctors and health workers have protested in Biratnagar on June 2 after their colleague was beaten. They protested with placards at the Koshi Hospital Biratnagar premises and demanded security for the health workers.
Medical Superintendent of Koshi Hospital, Dr Chuman Lal Singh Das said, it is very sad to realize that the frontline workers dedicated all day and night against the crisis of COVID-19, are not safe.
SP Santosh Khadka of District Police Office, Morang, said in a phone conversation with INSEC’s District Representative that an investigation is ongoing regarding the incident.
