Food crisis on the eve of Festival

The food crisis has hit Humla district from the last four months. This has severely affected the locals on the eve of Hindu’s great festival Dashain. The shortage is due to the lack of road network not being connected to the rural part of the district.

The Humla dwellers are always facing food crisis during this year of the month according to local Bhuwan Bhandari of Simkot Rural Municipality-2.

There has been food crisis in Sarkegadh, Srinagar and Darma food depot according to local Phulmaya Pariyar.

Ward chairman Nanda Bahadur Bohara of Changkheli Rural Municipality-1 complained that last year only once the rice was supplied and since then no supply is done.

In district headquarter of Simkot, there are 268 quintals of stock but in Sarkegadh, Srinagar and Darma depot there are no food stock. Chief Ram Bahadur Bista of Food Corporation in Humla said that some of the left stock of rice will be distributed during the festival however per family 5 kg only.

There are 22 thousand quintals of rice in Surkhet however no letter has been received yet for the delivery according to acting Chief Jeevnath Kandel of Food Corporation.

There are less fertile lands in upper parts of the Karnali region creating food crisis. The Food Corporation and contractor have failed to deliver rice on time. The people in this area are compelled to celebrate their festival without enough food.
