Male inmates from Palpa prison are generating income by braiding the rope.
According to the guard of the prison, Bishnu Prasad Shrestha, the rope produced by the inmates have got the market in Butwal, Chitwan, and Kathmandu as well as presented in different fairs.
More than hundred prison inmates from morning to evening engage themselves in braiding ropes- said Shrestha. He added: “The materials essential for the product is made available by me.”
The profit made out of the product is distributed to inmates and taken to the market. He also informed that the prisoners are also happy to work.
According to inmate, Khagu Basyal, they earn Rs. 10, 000 a month from the work. He who has also been working at library for its management stated that the inmates are also gets busy due to the work. Those who are not engaged in work also keep themselves occupied with the books and newspaper available in the library- said Basyal.
Jailer of the prison, Sujata Karki informed that the similar income generating work for women inmates has not been conducted. It is good to engage inmates in work as per her experience. The prison currently has 208 male prisoners and 53 female inmates.
