Baglung Facing Crisis of Medicines Due to Public Hoarding

Lack of essential medicines has caused problems for the patients of Dhaulagiri Hospital.

During the period of the current crisis, where there is a shortage of oxygen in private and government health facilities, there is a shortage of vital medicines in Baglung.

According to Health Assistant Saroj Chhetri of Dhaulagiri Hospital, there is a shortage of essential medicines in the district.

He clarified that cetamol used for fever, dexamethasone used for respiratory problems and allergies, hydrocortisone used in pain-relieving, swelling, itching; heparin used by patients with heart and kidney problems may not be available immediately.

Shishir Pant, Director of Parallel Medical Firm, said that there was a shortage of medicines being used to treat the infected due to the increasing number of infected people and the ongoing prohibitory order.

He said that there has been a shortage of medicines like cetamol, dexamethasone, heparin and hydrocortisone for a week.

According to Pant, 1,035 people are actively infected in the district.

Medical Superintendent of Dhaulagiri Hospital, Baglung, Dr Shailendra B. Pokharel said that the people who have not suffered from any disease, have been hoarding medicines which are creating the crisis.

He has suggested public buy and consumes medicines only after the advice of the health workers.

However, Dr Pokharel said that the actual patients have started facing a lack of medicines as not only the patients but also the general public have started buying the medicine after seeing the increasing condition of Covid-19 infection in the district.

According to Health Assistant Chhetri, the risk will increase as there is a lack of oxygen in health institutions and even in pharmaceuticals.

On this issue, Chief of Baglung Municipality Health Branch Ram Prasad Khanal said that necessary initiatives and coordination are being taken to prevent a shortage of medicines.

He said, ‘The medicines are not null yet but the demand of the medicine is growing. The medicines have been bought not only by the patients but also by the general public even if they do not need it. We will do our best to manage and supply the medicines immediately.’
