55 Human Rights Defender Victimized within 10 Months

According to the Informal Sector Service Centre (INSEC), 55 human rights defenders have been victimized within 10 months of the year 2020.

The information was provided in a program organized on December 10 for the occasion of the 72nd human rights day.

According to the documentation of INSEC, 55 people including 25 journalists, 16 health-workers, 10 teachers, three social activists, and one human rights defender were victimized.

In the discussion, INSEC’s chairperson Dr. Indira Shrestha said that there is a lack of implementation of the proper mechanism of the government for the protection of human rights defenders.

She mentioned that due to COVID-19, the issues of human rights are at additional risk.

Speaking in the program, INSEC Executive Director Bijay Raj Gautam said that the government should increase its efforts for the protection of human rights defenders.

He said, there is a legal provision for human rights defenders, but there is a need to improve the implementation,” he said.

INSEC has also stated that it is celebrating the 72nd International Human Rights Day with various programs across the country under the slogan ‘Human Rights in Pandemic: Expanding Access to Health Care for All’.
