Sindhuli Hospital Vandalized After Death of Pregnant Woman: Impacted Hospital Services

An outraged group vandalized Sindhuli Hospital over the death of Ganga Gurung Shrestha, 25, Silame, Kamalamai Municipality-5, on May 23 in Sindhuli Hospital. Sindhuli Hospital referred Ganga, who was admitted to the hospital, to Sai Multispecialty Hospital and Trauma Center, Bardiwas at 3 pm. Her family transported Ganga to the refereed hospital, the hospital declared her dead as soon as she reached the hospital.

One of the relatives of the dead claimed that the doctor’s negligence led to the death of the pregnant woman and demanded legal action against them. The relatives and the family of the deceased then proceeded to vandalize the hospital.  The outraged group attacked the emergency ward, OPD, general ward, pharmacy, and other physical structures of the hospital, on May 23.

Satish Chandra Dhakal, Hospital Development Committee informed that the hospital halted the OPD and the emergency services due to the physical damage caused by the protestors. The medical crew halted all hospital services after discharging the patients. Additionally, vehicles on the hospital’s property were also damaged.

Rajkumar Silwal, ASP of the District Police Office said that Police Inspector Ram Bhakta Bhattarai, along with a Police Head Constable, was injured during the incident. The injured were treated in Sindhuli Hospital.

The protestors blocked BP highway for approximately an hour by burning tires on the road. Similarly, they burned the construction materials, from an ongoing construction in the hospital.

Sunita Nepal, Chief District Officer is organizing an all-party meeting, which also includes security agencies. They demanded the hospital pay compensation to the deceased’s family. They further demanded the hospital pay for the education and health of the deceased’s daughters.
