Two people have died and three others have been injured in the last 24 hours due to floods and landslides triggered by continuous rainfall in the district.
In a natural disaster incident, Kanchhi Maya Sherpa, 79 of Tumwewa Rural Municipality–4, Olne, died after her house was buried by a landslide on the night of October 5, 2025.
According to the police, Misek Nembang, 17 died after being swept away by the Nibu River in Tribeni Dobhan, Falgunand Rural Municipality–3.
Inspector Rupesh Tamang of the District Police Office informed that Manmaya Karki, 37 of Miklajung–3 Solumba, Sukmaya Angdembe , 72 of Falgunand Rural Municipality–1 Aluwari, and Dhan Bahadur Chemjong of Jaubari, Falgunand–5, were injured after being buried by a landslide.
Due to the heavy rainfall, most roads in the district have been damaged. Mechi Raj Marg, Tamor Corridor, and the Mid-Hill Highway have been obstructed due to floods and landslides.
As roads in various areas have been swept away, the movement of vehicles including ambulances has been halted. This has made it difficult to transport the injured and sick to well-equipped hospitals.
In Morang, one woman has died due to drowning after the flood caused by continuous rain. The incident occurred near the sugar mill in Biratnagar Metropolitan City–16. On October 5, Anita Raut, 35, an Indian national currently living in a rented house in Biratnagar–16, was swept away by the flood and drowned in a culvert pit nearby. Locals immediately rescued her, but the police reported that she had already died.
In Sunsari, more than 1,300 houses have been inundated due to the natural disaster. Life in Sunsari has been severely disrupted by floods, inundation, and landslides caused by continuous rainfall. DSP Yogaraj Khatiwada of the District Police Office, Sunsari, said that floods and landslides have caused damage in places like Dharan, Itahari, Inaruwa, Barahkshetra, Ramdhuni, and Bhokraha Narsingh.
Landslides have obstructed the Dharan–Bhedetar section of the Koshi Highway and the Dharan–20 Bishnupaduka–Sagurigadhi road. Even the office building of Madhuwan Police Post has been damaged after water entered the premises, according to DSP Khatiwada.
In Inaruwa Municipality–9, around 120 houses have been affected by the flood, and another 70 houses in Inaruwa–10. In the Jalpapur area alone, 300 houses have been submerged, with around 60 families forced to take shelter at relatives’ homes. In Inaruwa Municipality–4, Marik Tole, 20 houses and the Janoddya Basic School have been submerged due to the flooding of the Sunsari River. Similarly, in Inaruwa–8, Gauri Tole, 20 houses have also been submerged.
In Barahkshetra Municipality, around 160 houses have been inundated, according to Inspector Diwas Kunwar of the Area Police Office, Mahendranagar. He said that after houses were submerged, residents of four homes in Barahkshetra–7, Pani Tanki area, took shelter at neighbors’ houses. In Barahkshetra–8, Nawaraj Uraw, 45 was swept away by the Dobhan River. In Barahkshetra–4, the Sardu River has eroded land toward the high-tension tower over an area of 2,405,700 sq. ft.
In Bhokraha Narsingh Rural Municipality–5, around 300 houses have been submerged. In Dharmikta Tole of Bhokraha Narsingh–1, 20 houses were flooded due to the overflow of the Sunsari River.
Even the Cardio Neuro Hospital in Bhokraha has been flooded, affecting the delivery of medical services. In Itahari Sub-Metropolitan City, the SOS Children’s Village has also been submerged, according to its head, Devcharan Chaudhary.
In Panchayan areas of Ramdhuni Municipality–6 and 7, around 20 houses have been flooded. In Drum and Sukumbasi Tole of Itahari–5, 10 houses have been submerged, according to the police.
